Red Bean Steamed Bun (红豆沙包)

While the missus and I had our dim sum session on weekend, red bean steamed bun would occasionally be our choice. Especially when we were looking for something sweet to munch. They  are sweet on the inside, and fluffy on the outside. A perfect sweet snack to satisfy our sweet tooth. Actually it was her sweet tooth all along 🙂

Aside from buying one, making this simple red bean steamed buns at home from scratch is very easy. After all, it is just Chinese steamed buns with red bean paste filling. The filling is very easy to make, and the bun is just normal Chinese steamed bun dough. A bit of efforts and a little of time are all we need~

Now, to the taste! Fluffy on the outside, and sweet on the inside. These are best described the taste of red bean steamed bun. If the red bean paste was done right, you could slightly taste some nuttiness from the red bean paste. Just mildly though.

We have shared a few steamed bun recipe here, starting with the simplest Chinese steamed bun (馒头). If you have mastered it, the sky is the limit for you to make different steamed buns. Red bean steamed bun is just one of the few different type of buns you can make at home. Also the simplest to make in our opinion.

With that said, it is time to make steamed buns! Just follow below simple recipe, the fluffy and sweet red bean steamed buns will be readied in no time. Give it a try~

  • Rolling pin

Ingredients
  

Ingredients for making bun

  • 250 g Medium protein flour/ pau flour all purposed flour would do as well)
  • 50 g Caster sugar (Or regular sugar but finely grind)
  • 130 ml Warm water
  • 1 tbsp Vegetable oil (Or any cooking oil)
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 1/2 tsp Instant dry yeast
  • 1/2 tsp Baking powder

Ingredients for making filling

  • 100 g Red bean paste
  • Sugar (adjust to your liking)

Instructions
 

Making red bean paste filling

  • First, wash 100g of red bean. Bring them to a pot and fill them with enough water to cover them. Boil them until they are soft. Add more water if needed so it does not go dry.
  • When the beans are soft enough, add sugar in and keep boiling until it is sticky, creamy, and slightly dry. Remember to keep stirring to prevent it from burning.
  • When it is readied, scoop it out and let it cool to room temperature while we work on the steamed bun dough.

Making the bun

  • Sift the flour into a mixing bowl. Add salt, sugar, and baking powder in.
  • Fill a measuring cup with 130ml of warm water. Add the instant dry yeast in. Mix it well.
  • Pour the yeast water into the flour and mix them well. Knead it with your hands until they form into a dough.
  • Add vegetable oil in and continue to knead it until it is smooth. It should take about 10 minutes or so.
  • When the dough is smooth and shiny, let it sit and rise until double in size. It should take about 1 to 2 hours.

Time to make red bean buns

  • When the dough is readied and the filling is done. Bring the dough onto a floured table top.
  • Roll it into a long log. Cut it into 6 pieces. Form each of them into a small round dough.
  • Take one small dough, flatten it with a roller.
  • Place it on your palm, Scooped 1/6 of the red bean filling and place it on center.
  • Now, while it resting on your palm, make small pinch on the edge of the dough with your another hand. Continue pinching them together until the gap is closed. Finally pinched the top and make it into a round bun shape.
  • Do the same for the rest and let it rest for about 1/2 an hour. Remember to place each bun on a cut grease paper.

Time to steam the buns

  • After half an hour, the buns will rise a bit. Place your buns in the steamer and steam it for about 10 minutes and we are done!
